🌊 LPS vs SPS vs Soft Corals: Which is Right for Your Tank?
Share
One of the first questions new reefers ask is: “What kind of coral should I start with?” The answer depends on your tank setup, experience level, and what type of reef you dream of creating. The three main coral groups — Soft Corals, LPS (Large Polyp Stony Corals), and SPS (Small Polyp Stony Corals) — all have unique looks, care needs, and challenges.
At Gem State Corals, we stock a variety of all three so reefers at every stage can find the perfect fit.
🌿 Soft Corals (Beginner-Friendly)
Soft corals don’t build skeletons like stony corals do, which makes them flexible and easy to care for.
Examples: Zoanthids, Mushrooms, Toadstools, Green Star Polyps (GSP).
-
Lighting: Low to moderate.
-
Flow: Low to moderate.
-
Best for: Beginners who want hardy, forgiving corals that grow fast and add color and movement.
💡 Tip: Soft corals often grow quickly — give them space so they don’t overtake other corals.
🟢 LPS Corals (Intermediate Level)
LPS (Large Polyp Stony) corals have fleshy polyps and a calcium skeleton. They’re more colorful and dramatic than soft corals, but need a bit more care.
Examples: Hammer, Torch, Frogspawn, Duncan, Acanthastrea.
-
Lighting: Moderate.
-
Flow: Gentle to moderate, avoid blasting.
-
Best for: Reefers ready for larger, showpiece corals with movement and tentacles.
✨ Gem State Torch Corals are a stunning example of beginner-to-intermediate LPS.
🔵 SPS Corals (Advanced Level)
SPS (Small Polyp Stony) corals are the crown jewels of reef tanks, but also the most demanding. Their tiny polyps require stable, pristine water and strong lighting.
Examples: Acropora, Montipora, Birdsnest.
-
Lighting: High (PAR 200–400+).
-
Flow: Strong, random flow.
-
Best for: Experienced hobbyists who can maintain ultra-stable water parameters.
🌈 Bonus: SPS reward your efforts with incredible colors — pinks, purples, blues, and rainbows.
🎯 Which Should You Choose?
-
New hobbyist? Start with Soft Corals.
-
Ready for bigger color and movement? Try LPS.
-
Experienced reefer with stable parameters? Go SPS.
No matter your skill level, there’s a coral type for you. At Gem State Corals, we’ll help you pick the right ones to match your tank, budget, and experience.
